AGPTS LIFETIME COMMITMENT

As a premier group home and support services company, we pledge to provide our residents and clients with the most dedicated and loving service possible.  We beleive here at A Great Place To Stay, that everyone deserves respect.  We encourage everyone to take a pledge to promote respect in our communities – the pledge to remove the “R-word” permanently from your vocabulary.  “Mentally retarded” is a term that was historically used in medical and clinical settings, yet in recent years it has become a commonly used insult, synonymous with “stupid”.  Over time, the cultural meaning of this term has changed drastically, and has unfortunately become an offensive slur.  For individuals with intellectual disabilities and their loved ones, using this term as slang in everyday speech is hurtful and insulting.  Although it may not be directed at an individual with a disability, it still reinforces negative stereotypes and creates a sense of non-acceptance within a community.  Federal legislation has officially removed the term “mentally retarded” from all government communications and replaced it with “intellectual disability”.  Many schools, organizations and individuals have followed suit.

We strive to ensure that our family members, residents and clients alike, have the most profoundly loving and caring atmosphere when living or dealing with our company.  Therefore, we consciously set forth to irradicate these derogatory terms in all walks of life and encourage the same to everyone!

Advocacy

The human services field has made great strides over the past few decades, but it still takes the support of the community at large for our voices to be heard.  Show your dedication to human services by taking action – contact your legislator to help stop budget cuts for valuable services, attend an event to support self-advocates, write a letter to the editor to share your story. There are many ways to show you care!
